During the President’s first term, clean energy tax incentives attracted billions of dollars in private investment in almost 50,000 clean energy projects, creating tens of thousands of jobs. Permanent extension keeps the momentum building, while creating new jobs in clean energy.”

Green Mountain Signs Distribution Agreement with Solluxus for Bio-Miracle Products

Dutch startup Off-Grid Solutions makes an end to developing countries’ killing kerosene dependency. They want their high-tech, low-cost WakaWaka solar LED lamp to light up Africa ‘like a Christmas tree’.

Thanks to this innovative way of crowdfunding, WakaWaka grows at the speed of light .And with it, the dream of providing all Africans with a sustainable light solution becomes more real by the minute.

1.5 billion people live off-grid. They depend on kerosene fuel for their basic lighting needs. Annually millions of children suffer severe burns from accidents with kerosene lamps. The toxic fumes cause even more health problems. World Bank reports that each day 780 million women and children inhale the equivalent of two packs of cigarettes as a result of indoor air pollution.

Fuels for lighting take up to 20% of income of people who try to survive on less than $2 a day. This way, the poor stay poor. But there is light at the end of the tunnel: WakaWaka solar LED light.

The WakaWaka (‘Shine Bright’ in Swahili) solar lamp uses the latest in patented solar technology developed by Intivation, allowing for superior charging in any weather conditions.

Each day of free solar charging gives 16 hours of decent reading light. 7,000 Kids Join UK’s Biggest Ever School Trip

Energy, water and healthy living will be the highlight of the timetable for 7,000 school kids this week (7 – 11 November) as they join the UK’s biggest ever school trip to get a real taste of learning about sustainability outside the classroom.

At The Co-operative’s ‘Green Schools Revolution: LIVE!’ events up and down the country, all 7,000 pupils will get to visit one of eleven UK Science and Discovery Centres, including the Eden Project (Cornwall), the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew (London), Thinktank (Birmingham), Museum of Science and Industry (Manchester), W5 (Belfast), Satrosphere (Aberdeen) and Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) (Wales) for a special Green Schools Revolution lesson.

During the week, each venue will bring unique experiences into the Green Schools Revolution programme, from pupils ascending 305 steps to the top of the world’s only climbable wind turbine at Ecotech in Norfolk, to exploring the importance of plants and the vital role they play in sustainable and healthy living at Kew Gardens.

Entry to the venues for all 7,000 children is fully funded by The Co-operative, with the first 100 schools to have registered also landing themselves subsidised coach travel.

According to research by The Co-operative, 92 per cent of children (aged 7-14) want to learn more about green issues, helping to save the environment and healthy living*, which are the key components of the Green Schools Revolution.

And parents are backing the initiative too with 87 per cent of them wanting their kids to learn more about green issues*. This could be down to the fact their own green knowledge is lacking – over half of parents are confused about what causes climate change*. Clearly educating their children has a much wider impact as parents are willing to learn from their kids with 95 per cent saying they have become greener as a result of their kids pester power*.

The Co-operative’s Green Schools Revolution education programme, part of its Inspiring Young People campaign, was launched in 3,000 primary and secondary schools in September by farmer and TV presenter Jimmy Doherty. It has been designed to inspire the next generation of green pioneers, with free lessons including recycling tips, trips and green activities and leisure ideas available to all UK primary and secondary schools.

Michael Fairclough, Head of Community and Campaigns, said: “We are lucky that our youngsters have such a tremendous appetite to learn more about green issues. Green Schools Revolution LIVE! will be the UK’s biggest ever school trip giving school children from all four corners of the UK the opportunity to visit their nearest Science and Discovery Centre for an inspirational school visit that will ensure the next generation are better equipped for the challenge of building a more sustainable world.”

The Co-operative Moves On Palm Oil

The Co-operative Group has become the largest UK supermarket to certify all of its palm oil use as sustainable.

The move by the consumer-owned retailer will help to protect endangered species, such as the orang-utan and the Sumatran tiger, as well as safeguard the future of smallholder farmers.

The retailer is purchasing accredited GreenPalm certificates from a co-operative of smallholders who are producing sustainable palm oil, accredited by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

The premium the smallholders receive helps them to build capacity for further production of sustainable palm oil.

Palm oil, which is used in modern food products, such as biscuits, pies and ready meals is one of the largest drivers of global deforestation, with Malaysia and Indonesia, which have some of the richest rainforests on the planet, accounting for 90% of production worldwide. These rainforests provide refuge for endangered species such as the orang-utan, the Sumatran tiger, elephants and rhinos. Further deforestation on Indonesian and Malaysian islands (Borneo, Sarawak and Sumatra) will push these species closer to extinction.

As part of its groundbreaking Ethical Plan launched earlier this year, The Co-operative committed to be a leading UK retailer on forest protection, and to move its palm oil sourcing to a sustainable footing by the end of 2011.

The retailer has achieved its target ahead of schedule, meaning that 4,729 tonnes of palm oil used annually will be certified as sustainable via one of the four certification systems agreed by the RSPO.

The Co-operative has also been working to increase the number of its own-brand products that contain fully traceable, certified sustainable palm oil, aiming to ensure all palm oil used as an ingredient in The Co-operative brand products come from this system by 2015. This move will further help customers of The Co-operative Food stores to make ethical and sustainable choices in store. It currently has 81 own-brand products that contain fully traceable, sustainable palm oil.

Sean Toal, Acting Chief Executive, The Co-operative Food, said: “Deforestation and the loss of natural habitat for the orang-utan and other endangered species are major issues, but, as a consumer-owned retailer, we are determined to play our part in supporting sustainable solutions.”

Children Teaching Grown-Ups A Lesson Or Two About Green Issues

Children are resorting to “green pester power”, pushing their parents to act more sustainably – and their efforts are paying off, according to a new report published yesterday (20 September).

Half of parents say they struggle to answer their children’s questions about green issues – more than half for instance, incorrectly put the blame for climate change on carbon monoxide.

But six in ten say their children are persuading them to be greener, with recycling, conserving water and leaving the car at home among the things their offspring are asking them to do most often…and when they’re pressured, 95 per cent of them change their behaviour as a result.

The study is published by The Co-operative, to mark the official launch of its Green Schools Revolution (GSR) educational programme, which forms part of its groundbreaking Ethical Plan. The programme will meet the needs of information-hungry children, who rate green issues a close third in terms of learning priorities just behind Maths and English.

More than four in five parents believe their children learn more about the environment at school than they did – two in five say they were taught nothing about the issues at all.

The Co-operative Group says it has been “overwhelmed” by the pre-registration demand for the programme’s range of teaching materials from more than 2,500 primary and secondary schools across the UK, caring for over one million children.

Paul Monaghan, Head of Sustainability at the Co-operative Group said: “We are lucky that our youngsters have such a tremendous appetite to learn more about green issues and make a difference.

“Through our Green Schools Revolution programme, we hope to do our bit to help the thousands of switched on teachers who want to ensure the next generation are better equipped for the challenge of building a more sustainable world. However, parents aren’t off the hook – clearly they need extra homework and the programme will put children in a good position to teach them.”

Farmer and television presenter, Jimmy Doherty is launching the programme with the help of schoolchildren at a London primary school. He said: “As a parent, a farmer, and an enthusiastic advocate of sustainable living, I think it is vitally important to educate our children about green issues from an early age. I’ve been passionate about the environment since I was a teenager, but back then there was little information around to inspire others to change, so I’m delighted to see that The Co-operative is launching its Green Schools Revolution programme, which offers so much to encourage children to consider their environmental impact as second nature.”

From today, all GSR schools across the country will have access to a wide range of free cross-curricular classroom resources and activities through www.greenschools.coop, giving young people and teachers the tools to inspire change in their schools, homes and local communities.

The Co-operative is offering schools free fun and educational visits to its own wind farm to see renewable energy in action and to seven Co-operative Farms to see firsthand how food grows and how to cook it. Schools will be able to take advantage of free high visibility jackets to help set up “walking buses” for pupils, helping both schools and parents to take practical action to cut their carbon emissions.

Rep. Mallory Seeks Funding for Clean Air Cincinnati Project

State Representative Dale Mallory (D-Cincinnati) today announced that he will work to secure federal, state and local dollars for three innovative local projects designed to reduce air pollution and increase energy efficiency in Cincinnati. The effortis intended to result in a cleaner, healthier environment in downtown neighborhoods.

“These projects, working through Clean Air Cincinnati, combine the elements of unique community development, improved air quality and energy efficiency,” said Rep. Mallory. “The proposed green Greyhound terminal and the Buddy LaRosa Sports Arena will feature a number of energy efficient designs which focus on reducing atmospheric emissions, energy consumption, materials resource use, waste management and biodiversity.”
Rep. Mallory, who chairs the Ohio House Environment and Brownfield Development Committee and is Vice Chairman of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, will seek federal, state and local funding for three innovative projects that integrate LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) concepts and sustainable environmental practices:

1) Construction of a state-of-the-art eco-friendly green Greyhound terminal in Queensgate

2) Demolition of the old Greyhound terminal on Gilbert Avenue

3) Construction of a “green” 5,000-seat Buddy LaRosa Sports Arena on the Gilbert Avenue site

Rep. Mallory is also putting together an Advisory Group to assist the Clean Air Cincinnati Project. Their role will include guidance for the Project’s framework, outreach and help in developing ideas that advance clean air quality.

Scaling Caused by Hard Water Can Be Prevented Without Using Environment Damaging Chemicals Or Water Softeners – As This Dairy Case History Shows

The presence of calcium carbonate in water gives rise to the formation of a deposit of hard scale on surfaces particularly when water is heated. In dairies this is a severe problem where it forms on stainless steel and is required to be removed by using chemicals. These chemicals then have to be thoroughly rinsed off before equipment is reused to avoid contaminating the milk. Of course all the chemicals being rinsed off go into the drains and then into streams and rivers. But there is also another problem caused by the scale. In addition to being difficult to remove and reducing the efficiency of the plant presence of calcium provides a surface upon which protein matter can deposit and bacteria can then breed. This deposition is called milk stone.

Stainless steel is used for good reason in dairies because it is not prone to corrosion and has a very smooth surface… But Scale destroys all this and leads to the requirement to spend hours chemical cleaning and scouring.

Lalu Farms of Sparta Tennessee found a solution to this problem, one that was totally environment friendly and that saved hours on manpower, eliminated chemicals and reduced the risk of bacterial contamination.

By installing a Scaletron catalytic water conditioner manufactured by Fluid Dynamics International they were able to neutralise the calcium carbonate in the water so that it did not form a hard scale and did not stick to the pipework or other stainless steel surfaces. The end result as the owners of the dairy say in their report is that they “saved huge amounts of chemicals and tons of man hours and considerable amounts of money”. Milk stone has been totally eliminated since the installation of the Scaletron Catalytic conditioner that treats all the water coming from a well with 400ppm of hardness.

The Scaletron works by imparting a small electrical charge into the water and this affects the calcium carbonate in such a way that it does not form a hard scale. The technology developed by Fluid Dynamics is used worldwide in the food industry, engineering, motor manufacturing and buildings. Clients range from Unilever to Honda and from the City Mall in Jordan to the Kempinski Hotel in Dubai and include Cambridge University in England. Simply installed in the pipework the product requires no maintenance and has no moving parts. Over 250,000 are installed worldwide.

The Co-operative Group Presents ‘The Tarnished Earth Street Gallery’

Tarnished Earth, a dramatic street gallery of photographs telling the story of one of the world’s biggest ecological disasters is open FREE to anyone walking along the morelondon site on London’s Southbank (between London Bridge and Tower Bridge) for four weeks from 14th September.

The FREE outdoor photo exhibition will then tour the country, making an impact in busy public areas in cities across the UK by Spring 2011.

The striking images will show how Canada’s magnificent Boreal Forest is being destroyed and polluted by the rush to extract oil from the tar sands just below the surface.

Tarnished Earth, which is being staged by The Co-operative, in conjunction with WWF-UK and Greenpeace, will contrast the destruction caused by the oil extraction with the area’s pristine wilderness and the traditional way of life of the indigenous First Nation Cree.

The street gallery is the latest chapter in The Co-operative’s Toxic Fuels campaign, which aims to stop tar sands expansion. The greenhouse gas emissions from tar sands oil is far greater than those of conventional oil, and its exploitation alone would be sufficient to take us to the brink of runaway climate change.

The story of the Albertan tar sands developments and the devastating impact they are having on the environment and local First Nation communities is told in the film Dirty Oil, which was also supported by The Co-operative. The film is available to buy on DVD from 13th September.

Caribou Extinction Is The Latest Environmental Threat To Oil Industry

The possible extinction of the woodland caribou in Alberta, Canada is the latest environmental disaster threatening to disrupt the oil industry, according to a new report issued today (15/7/10) by The Co-operative.

Woodland caribou, once common in the boreal forest of Alberta, are now threatened with extinction in the region by rapidly expanding developments extracting oil from the tar sands. Under Canadian law the government has a duty to protect the habitat of woodland caribou; however, to date, next to no action has been taken. In response Cree indigenous communities living in the area are now calling for an immediate moratorium with immediate effect, on all new industrial developments in those areas within caribou habitat.

This would have major consequences for oil industry expansion plans for the tar sands, including BP’s recently announced Kirby tar sands project which would lie within critical habitat.

As part of its Toxic Fuels Campaign as well as other environmental campaigns such as Climate Change Facts, The Co-operative is working with the Beaver Lake Cree Nation, a small indigenous community in northeast Alberta whose traditional territories cover 30 per cent of all existing Albertan tar sands operations.

An expert study by Dr Stan Boutin of the University of Alberta and funded by The Co-operative, looked at the two caribou herds within the Beaver Lake Cree’s traditional territories, an area the size of Switzerland. It found that only 175 – 275 caribou remain, down 10 fold on historic numbers, and that these herds are facing extinction by 2025 without immediate habitat protection.

New Film Shows The Folly Of £250 Billion Of Tar Sands Investments

The massive resources being poured into environmentally damaging tar sands could kick start ambitious plans to supply Europe with solar energy f r o m North Africa or enable the world to hit half of the Millennium Development Goals in the 50 least developed countries, including averting four million child deaths annually and providing universal primary education.

It is literally a matter of life and death that these enormous oil titans are re-steered to much more sustainable paths

These are the findings of a thought-provoking report by The Co-operative and WWF-UK, which puts into perspective the estimated £250 billion ($379 billion) the big oil companies are planning to invest in tar sands between now and 2025.

The report coincides today (15 March) with the UK premiere of Dirty Oil, a hard-hitting documentary film that outlines the impact tar sands extraction is having on the environment and the health of first nation Indians. The film, which is being distributed with the help of The Co-operative, will be premiered at 25 cinemas across the UK.

Narrated by Canadian actress and environmentalist Neve Campbell, the beautifully photographed documentary f r o m the Academy Award Nominated director Leslie Iwerks goes behind-the-scenes and tells the tar sands story through the eyes of scientists, industry officials, politicians, doctors, environmentalists and indigenous Cree Indians.

The ‘Opportunity Cost of the Tar Sands’ Report (PDF 562 KB), written by The Co-operative and WWF-UK as part of their Dirty Oil Campaign, shows how the money invested in tar sands would halve the proportion of people in the world living without access to clean water and sanitation, provide universal primary education, and hit the targets to avert the deaths of 4 million children, 300,000 mothers, and almost half a million victims of HIV and TB.

The extraction and production of oil f r o m the tar sands emits on average three times more greenhouse gases than conventional oil production and as a result has attracted considerable criticism f r o m environmentalists and investors alike.

The report finds the money which oil companies want to pump into tar sands would also cover the cost of the Desertec Industrial Initiative which would link North African solar plants into a supergrid and supply 15 per cent of Europe’s electricity by 2050, or fund a Europe wide shift to electric vehicles.

The report highlights Shell and BP’s involvement in tar sands investments. BP is set to invest £6.63 billion ($10 billion) in its Sunrise tar sands project and also plans to spend another £1.62 billion ($2.5 billion) converting a refinery in Toledo, Ohio, to process the synthetic crude oil produced f r o m the tar sands. Meanwhile Shell is spending £8.7 billion ($14 billion) to expand the Athabasca Oil Sands Project (60 per cent owned by Shell) to raise its capacity to 255,000 barrels per day.

Paul Monaghan, Head of Social Goals at The Co-operative, said: “The sums of money being invested in tar sands developments are enormous and difficult for the average person to grasp. This report puts things into perspective and demonstrates not only the scale of the problem, which could take us close to the brink of runaway climate change, but also the opportunity being lost.

“It is literally a matter of life and death that these enormous oil titans are re-steered to much more sustainable paths.”

Colin Butfield, WWF-UK’s head of campaigns, said: “The world is currently heading for a real climate change crisis which can only be headed off by a real drive for clean energy. But if Canada extracts its probable reserves of 315 billion barrels of oil f r o m tar sands, this will undermine the drive for clean energy – and almost single-handedly commit the world to dangerous levels of CO2 in the atmosphere. This would contribute to dangerous climate change, destroying ecosystems and habitats around the world. We cannot afford this to happen.

“This report has thrown up some quite staggering statistics in terms of how that money could be spent trying to save the planet rather than destroy it. The $379bn question is will the oil companies listen? For the planet’s sake, they have to. After all, if this kind of investment in tar sands continues, it’s not just a grave threat to the boreal forests, wildlife and communities in Canada.”

Under the new EU laws, retail stores selling over 32kg of batteries a year must provide in-store recycling bins to encourage battery recycling. But manufacturers complain that the £3million bill for disposal and lack of consumer awareness make the new legislation flawed.

Currently, the UK recycles 3% of the 600 million batteries sold, meaning over half a billion batteries end up in UK landfill sites every year. Such a large amount of batteries going to landfill is a major concern for household environmentalists and Defra, as batteries can leak toxic substances such as cadmium into ground water. Mobile phone recycling companies have taken over our television sets of late to help capitalize on the recycling bandwagon. But despite this, in only the first month of the new legislation, battery manufacturers are already voicing their frustration with the recycling initiative. Vince Armitage, divisional vice-president at Varta, said: “The directive places the responsibility of meeting its stringent collection and recycling targets on the manufacturer, but it relies on the awareness of consumers to make it work.”

And it’s not just manufacturers that believe awareness is a major issue, with Bob Gordon from the British Retail Consortium asking for a “comprehensive and continuing Government information campaign.”

There’s no doubting that recycling awareness in the UK is lower than in some of our close EU neighbour countries. Figures from Defra suggest that UK households are only recycling 17% of 30.5 million tonnes of waste compared to over 50% on the continent. However companies that offer cash for old mobile phone batteries are proving to be popular and helping the recycling initiative.

The campaign for awareness becomes even louder when you consider the findings of recent battery recycling research conducted by waste and resources organisation
WRAP:
– An estimated 30,000 tonnes of batteries enter the UK market each year.
– 22,000 tonnes (or 110 Jumbo Jets) worth of household batteries (including mobile phones) end up in landfill unnecessarily every year
– 9 out of 10 people would recycle if there were a kerb-side collection scheme

With these figures firmly in their minds, the EU Council and Defra will no-doubt be hoping for support from public-eye recycling campaigners such as http://www.Love2Recycle.com to help build awareness and get the message across.

With help from third party campaigners, the new legislation does stand a good chance of increasing battery recycling and has strong support from the Government’s ‘Battery Compliance Scheme’ reports HookedOnRecycling.
