Hays PureWater Launches $10,000 Campaign To Save Lives

WASHINGTON, IA, November 25, 2014 — /EPR ENVIRONMENT NEWS/ — 783 million people live each day without clean water and 3.4 million die annually from a lack of pure water. To combat these staggering statistics, Washington-based nonprofit, Hays PureWater, launched a crowd-funding campaign. The money raised will fund 30 Khlor Glen technology units to purify water for 150,000 individuals. The organization hopes to raise $10,000 by December 1st.

Hosted on crowd-funding platform IndieGoGo, the project offers nine sponsorship levels. Each level includes novelty “rewards” for donors, ranging from stickers to t-shirts to a trip to Haiti. The rewards are unique, innovative and hands on, giving donors a sense of ownership in the project. For just $2,500, an investor can travel to Haiti (all inclusive) to see the life changing benefits first hand.

The Khlor Glen is a simple unit that turns salt water into chlorine. The chlorine treats infected water, removing deadly impurities and toxins in just one hour. It’s solar powered and easily used in remote areas, where clean water is most needed. “It will also impact malaria zones as it can be used as a bug repellant and protect from disease,” says founder John Hays. “Even just using the chlorine produced by the unit as a sanitizer can cut down on so many infections that the natives in these areas don’t even know exist.”

In the last eight years, Hays PureWater distributed over 4,000 purifying units around the world, changing entire communities by implementing this system. It’s proven to work. Green Mountain Signs Distribution Agreement with Solluxus for Bio-Miracle Products

The main focus of the Riverview Project is to provide panoramic photos and videos of America’s most imperiled rivers. It is, essentially, Google’s Streetview for the nation’s waterways. Scaling Caused by Hard Water Can Be Prevented Without Using Environment Damaging Chemicals Or Water Softeners – As This Dairy Case History Shows

The presence of calcium carbonate in water gives rise to the formation of a deposit of hard scale on surfaces particularly when water is heated. In dairies this is a severe problem where it forms on stainless steel and is required to be removed by using chemicals. These chemicals then have to be thoroughly rinsed off before equipment is reused to avoid contaminating the milk. Of course all the chemicals being rinsed off go into the drains and then into streams and rivers. But there is also another problem caused by the scale. In addition to being difficult to remove and reducing the efficiency of the plant presence of calcium provides a surface upon which protein matter can deposit and bacteria can then breed. This deposition is called milk stone.

Stainless steel is used for good reason in dairies because it is not prone to corrosion and has a very smooth surface… But Scale destroys all this and leads to the requirement to spend hours chemical cleaning and scouring.

Lalu Farms of Sparta Tennessee found a solution to this problem, one that was totally environment friendly and that saved hours on manpower, eliminated chemicals and reduced the risk of bacterial contamination.

By installing a Scaletron catalytic water conditioner manufactured by Fluid Dynamics International they were able to neutralise the calcium carbonate in the water so that it did not form a hard scale and did not stick to the pipework or other stainless steel surfaces. The end result as the owners of the dairy say in their report is that they “saved huge amounts of chemicals and tons of man hours and considerable amounts of money”. Milk stone has been totally eliminated since the installation of the Scaletron Catalytic conditioner that treats all the water coming from a well with 400ppm of hardness.

The Scaletron works by imparting a small electrical charge into the water and this affects the calcium carbonate in such a way that it does not form a hard scale. The technology developed by Fluid Dynamics is used worldwide in the food industry, engineering, motor manufacturing and buildings. Clients range from Unilever to Honda and from the City Mall in Jordan to the Kempinski Hotel in Dubai and include Cambridge University in England. Simply installed in the pipework the product requires no maintenance and has no moving parts. Over 250,000 are installed worldwide.

npower Volunteers Care For Coastline In Beach Clean Up

A group of wildlife enthusiasts from the npower graduate scheme has been giving Welsh beaches a boost in time for the British summer, donning their wellies to clean up the coastline in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Graduates from npower’s power station in Aberthaw adopted a stretch of coast and spent a day carrying out a beach clean, working to guidelines provided by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS), which is a UK charity dedicated to the protection of seas, shores and wildlife.

The group scaled the beach with a litter picking mission, helping to protect wildlife in the area and supporting the MCS’s campaign for cleaner seas, by providing campaigners with information about the litter found on the shoreline.

The Graduate Volunteers Day saw npower graduates support seven projects near to its operations across the UK. As a Volunteering England initiative in support of Volunteers’ Week (1 – 7 June) it is the latest drive from the organisation to encourage staff to support projects in their local community through its employee volunteering scheme.

Niall Moroney, team leader from npower, said: “Taking care of our shoreline is essential to the health of our seas and impacts greatly on marine life.

“The MCS has shown us that we can all do our part in protecting our beaches. Our work today mirrors our commitment to caring for the environment, keeping our beaches clean and safe for the next generation.”

Sue Kinsey from the MCS said: “We are delighted that this beautiful piece of coast has been adopted by the team. The results of their litter sweep will be essential in helping us determine the next step in conserving the area, and is a vital indication of the state of our oceans.”

In total 60 npower graduates volunteered on 4 June at projects in Swindon, Birmingham, Leeds, Didcot, Worcester and Aberthaw.

In Order To Mark World Environment Day 2009, Barclaycard Challenged Its Colleagues To ‘Cut A Kilo’ By Changing The Way That They Work

The campaign was part of Barclaycard’s commitment towards carbon neutrality and was aimed at helping colleagues understand how they can reduce their energy and water usage, and cut travel and unnecessary waste.

On the day itself, a team from Barclaycard was out and about litter picking near Barclaycard’s Brackmills HQ to help improve the local environment. Barclaycard also hosted guests from the local enterprise group Workbridge, the Energy Saving Trust and Monkey World.

Other initiatives taking place included a scheme to promote car sharing and promote the use of teleconferencing to reduce the need for long distance travel.

In 2008 Barclaycard colleagues saved over 500 tonnes of CO2, helping to make Barclaycard carbon neutral for its UK operations. In 2009, the aim is to become carbon neutral for the entire Barclaycard Global operation which has large operations in the US, Germany and South Africa amongst others.

A Class Action Lawsuit Demands Behr Dayton Thermal Plant To Make Financial Restitution For Damages To Residents Caused By Toxic Underground Fumes Caused By Groundwater Contamination Cased By The Plant

The Columbus, Ohio law firm of Leeseberg & Valentine, in litigation partnership with Janet, Jenner & Suggs, LLC (Maryland) and German Rubenstein, LLP (New York), have announced the filing of a class action lawsuit on behalf of residents living near the Behr Dayton Thermal Plant.

The suit demands that defendants Behr America, Inc., Behr Dayton Thermal Products, LLC and Behr Dayton Thermal Plant LLC, current owners of the facility, and Chrysler, LLC, former owner, make financial restitution for damages to residents caused by toxic underground fumes caused by groundwater contamination cased by the plant.

The suit was filed Tuesday, September 2, in the Court of Common Pleas, Montgomery, County, OH. The class includes all persons who live in the McCook Field neighborhood and other areas near the plant, located at 1600 Webster Street in Dayton.

“The U.S.Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the damage caused to the McCook neighborhood. Those responsible for the contamination need to be held accountable. Our lawsuit begins the process of holding the wrongdoers responsible for their disregard of the health and safety of these residents,” said attorney Anne Valentine.

Exceedingly high levels of toxic gases linked to cancer have been found in many homes in the area, leading the USEPA this year to nominate the site for the national Super Fund list.

The class action lawsuit seeks compensation for diminished property values, establishment of a medical monitoring fund, money to pay for installation and operation of air filtration systems, and punitive damages. Background

Census data shows the area includes an estimated 2,100 residents living in 1,100 homes and apartments. Former and current residents and property owners, and any persons who spent significant time in the area, such as employees of local businesses or schools, may have been exposed to harmful levels of chemicals and are included in the class.

At issue is a cloud, or plume, of poisonous gas that is rising from contaminated ground water in the area. The USEPA has pinpointed the source of the contamination as the thermal plant, when it was owned and operated by Chrysler Corp. Groundwater contamination in the area started in at least 1998, according to the EPA.

Chrysler has assumed responsibility for tracking and cleaning up the contamination. However, it is disputing EPA claims that the plume has spread significantly since 2002 and is now putting a greater number of people and properties at risk.

The Behr plume contains high levels of trichloroethylene or TCE, a highly toxic gas linked to cancer. The EPA considers a safe level of TCE for humans to be 0.4 parts per billion. Yet, indoor air concentrations in the community have been detected as high as 260 ppb. Air abatement systems have been installed in at least 185 properties in the area so far. The Ohio Department of Health has found rates of cancer from 1 ½ to nearly nine times the average in residents who live in near the plant.

USEPA released a report Aug. 1, warning that TCE levels in some homes in the area had reached levels “that may pose a long-term health threat.” The report said the Behr VOC plume is expected to continue to pose a public health hazard until the ground water is cleaned up. It said indoor air filtration systems proposed for impacted homes are only a temporary solution. One elementary school in the affected area has already been closed.

Chrysler owned and operated the plant from 1937 to 2002, first as Chrysler Corporation and then as the merged company, DaimlerChrysler. The facility, which manufactures vehicle air conditioners and cooling systems, was sold to Behr America in 2002.

Water, water everywhere. Not any more.

“Water conservation is not something to do on an occasional basis. The Company points to severe water shortages in the Southeast as an example of why water conservation is no longer an option. Orme, Tennessee, a small town about 40 miles west of Chattanooga and 150 miles northwest of Atlanta, has run out of water. Three times a week the fire chief hauls about 20,000 gallons of water from an Alabama fire hydrant a few miles away to the dry town. Dozens of trips are made back and forth to carry water for the town’s 145 residents. For just three hours each evening, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., residents scurry to wash clothes, take showers and fill water jugs. To solve the water problem the town is constructing a 2-1/2 mile pipe to connect Orme to the Bridgeport, Alabama water supply with a $377,590 emergency grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Even if your area has not been hit by a water shortage that is no guarantee there won’t be a problem in the future. So what can the average person do to help? Start with the basics. McNeill offers 10 easy tips to help conserve water.

1. Fix leaky faucets. A faucet dripping at one drop per second wastes 2,700 gallons a year.

2. Save up to 700 gallons of water each month by taking shorter showers. Even a one or two minute reduction can make a difference.

3. Don’t use the hose to clean sidewalks. Use a broom and save about 150 gallons of water each time.

4. Adjust sprinklers to make sure that only the lawn is getting watered. This can save 500 gallons of water each month.

5. Don’t run water while brushing your teeth or shaving and save three gallons of water every time.

6. Keep drinking water in the refrigerator so you don’t have to run water for cool drinks. This alone can save 200 to 300 gallons a month.

7. Water the lawn in the morning rather than during the day or in the evening. You’ll save 300 gallons.

8. Only use your dishwasher and clothes washer for full loads. Avoid using the permanent press cycle because it uses an added 5 gallons for the extra rinse.

9. Clean your car using a pail of soapy water rather than running the hose. Use the hose only for rinsing. Try a waterless car washing system such as Ecotouch which can save up to 100 gallons of water per wash.

10. Make sure your toilet tank isn’t leaking. Just put a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl, your tank is leaking and you’re wasting up to 200 gallons of water a day.

These are just a handful of tips that each family can implement to make a difference. “Turn these tips into new habits and your household can save thousands of gallons of water each month,” says McNeill. “To make an even bigger difference in water conservation share these tips with everyone you know.”
