What is Amazing Forest?

Yes, the Amazon rainforest is being cut down as you read this. 17% is already gone. The world’s lungs – as it’s referred to – is decreasing in size. Yes, everyone knows this. But what can we really do about it? The Amazing Forest is a chance to do something right from where you are, sitting in your chair, a few clicks and USD 60 away.

Amazing Forest is the venue where people from all over the world are combining their efforts into one single strain to restore the Amazon rainforest to its original state.

We sell trees. Not trees to be delivered to your door, but to be planted on your behalf, in your name, in a designated specific area of the Amazon rainforest. The trees being planted are new trees. So, instead of preserving already existing areas of the rainforest, the Amazing Forest is actually reversing deforestation. We take so much from Earth everyday; this is a way to give something back to it.

It’s a common saying that, to eternalise your passage in this life, one must have children, write a book and plant a tree. Well, the four tree species that are currently being planted in the Amazing Forest (they are native species typical of the region: jatoba, copaiba, ipe rosa and louro freijo) live in average 200 years.

And what’s cool about it, people get their own tree, which will never be cut down and remain throughout its life individualised by a name tag, with the name they choose for it.

“We want to give people the opportunity to make a difference for the environment while leaving their own positive footprint in the planet”, says Rodrigo Nascimbeni, the founding partner of the company, “a footprint so tangible and concrete that people can come and see it, show to their children, to their great-grand-children, to their friends…” he goes on referring to the fact that customers can visit their tagged trees in situ while walking inside the real Amazon rainforest.

Amazing Forest goes much beyond simply selling trees online, it is each person’s way to contribute to a better world and to guarantee that future generations will share the same bliss to live here on our planet.

And, better yet, this noble act of planting a tree and committing to a better world can be renewed as often as wanted. Each tree is sold for USD 60.

Besides doing your share of good for a better planet, people can buy trees either as a present for a loved one, a memorial, a way to mark an important occasion or as a simple and convenient method of offsetting their carbon emissions.

Amazing Forest launched on Monday the 23rd of May 2011. The first piece of land to be replanted is situated approximately 34 miles outside the city of Boa Vista, Roraima State in North Brazil (if you go to Google Maps, we’re right where the green arrow points to at these coordinates 2 29 44.40 N 60 56 40.85 W).

The Amazon rainforest is the world’s largest rainforest. It is the home of the world’s richest area of plant and animal diversity and an enormous source of potential lifesaving medicines. Not only that, it is a massive carbon sink that acts as the lungs of the world. Sadly, it is believed that “at current [deforestation] rates, 55% of [the Amazon’s] rain forests could be gone by 2030 – a looming disaster not only for the region’s plants and animals, but for the world”. Who is behind Amazing Forest
Amazing Forest is the realisation of four guys. It all started when the Brazilian Rodrigo Nascimbeni and the New Zealander Ben Cook, two lifelong friends, decided to take on this journey.

“We don’t believe that the size of a task should limit your ambition,” says Ben Cook. “The sad fact is that over 17% of this forest which is so integral to the health of our planet has been devastated by deforestation. If we all wait for someone else to take on this problem then we might just be too late. Rodrigo and I believe we have the passion and the skills to make this project work as a viable business where we can have fun whilst using our respective abilities to actually do something positive for the world we live in.”

Before launching Amazing Forest, Rodrigo created something called a receivables investment fund, the first one in Brazil. He also started and managed a few companies in the financial sector – which means he probably just gave up a successful international career in Investment Banking to plant trees in the Amazon rainforest.

Ben, although he achieved an honours degree in Plant Science, is the co-founder of Shake Interactive, a digital marketing agency operating from South Africa and the UK.

The two met in 1993 when Ben took part in a Rotary youth exchange programme in the tiny town of Votuporanga in Brazil. What started as a mutual need to learn the others native tongue ended in a lifelong friendship. Both have always wanted to work together but their respective careers had taken them in opposite directions and to different hemispheres.

As Amazing Forest was boiling inside their minds, they met Manuel Haas and Florian Herzog, two German Forest Engineers – also lifelong friends – living in Brazil and widely experienced in rainforest management and regeneration. Manuel and Florian came on board at the founding stages and are now an integral part of the team.

Climate modelling predicts changes to the rainfall in the UK, which will become heavy and more infrequent compared with the fine and persistent rainfall the UK is used to. Such changes in the climate will have a significant impact on the way people live and work.

The Eco Cities project will explore methods of adapting existing office space to the effects of climate change to ensure comfortable working conditions can be maintained, without relying on energy hungry technology.

Working with a global network of individuals and organisations, the project will provide Greater Manchester with a blueprint for a climate change adaptation strategy that will become a resource for planners and other relevant stakeholders with a responsibility for action in this field.

In addition to the adaptation of commercial property, it will also equip Greater Manchester with knowledge and understanding on how its public spaces and homes need to adapt.

Michael commented, “Reducing our output of CO2 is a task requiring government action but of equal importance is a clear understanding at city and individual level as to the vital role that they have to play in adapting our urban areas to a changing climate.

“Eco Cities aims to make a major contribution to the adaptation debate and to give clear and scientifically verified guidance to local government, companies and individuals.

What do they do with platinum anyway? When it comes to cleaning up air pollution, the answer is plenty

The effect of escalating platinum prices on the cost of reducing air pollution. During February’s CBS broadcast of 60 Minutes, veteran commentator Andy Rooney asked what was all the fuss concerning the recent astronomical rise in platinum prices. Rooney ranted “I don’t really know what platinum is. What do they do with platinum anyway?” When it comes to cleaning up air pollution, the answer is plenty.

Surprisingly, manufacturers of air pollution control products are the top consumers of platinum – not the jewelry industry. Platinum is the catalyst used inside of most catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters to rid exhaust emissions of dangerous soot, hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. With ever-more stringent air quality regulations being enforced in the United States and Europe, the demand for platinum has soared with the demand to control air pollution in cars, diesel trucks, construction vehicles, and emergency generators.

A recent shutdown of South African mines caused an increase of 41% in platinum prices since the beginning of the year. As South Africa supplies 78 percent of the world’s supply of this precious metal, even a stoppage of a few days has a worldwide effect on prices.

To put this dramatic rise in perspective:

– On February 21st, platinum reached an all-time high of $2,185 a troy ounce
– During the same month a year ago, platinum averaged $1,207 a troy ounce
– Five years ago, it averaged $684 a troy ounce during February of 2003

With an estimated worldwide shortage of 400,000 troy ounces predicted for 2008, prices may remain a volatile roller coaster.

What effect does escalating platinum prices have on the cost of reducing air pollution?

Manufacturers of air pollution control products are finding it increasingly more expensive to produce catalytic converters and particulate filters mandated by the EPA, the European Union and the California Air Resources Board. “We used to adjust our product prices twice per year according to the rise and fall of platinum prices,” said Technical Sales Engineer, Ralph Wintersberger of CleanAIR Systems, a manufacturer of diesel particulate filters and oxidation converters. “Now we have no choice but to keep a close eye on platinum fluctuations and make daily adjustments to our prices.”

In the end, the ever-increasing cost of cleaning up air pollution is passed on to the consumer:

– As the price of platinum rises, the price tag on cars and trucks will also increase to cover the cost of catalytic converters made with high-priced platinum.

Hospitals, schools, and data centers will feel the brunt of escalating platinum prices when they install diesel particulate filters on their emergency backup generators to decrease toxic air pollution.

Diesel school buses are being retrofitted all over the country with converters to protect children from dangerous pollutants – a direct cause of asthma, bronchitis and other lung impairments. High platinum prices translates into fewer buses being retrofitted for the safety of riders.

Mining equipment and construction vehicles are equipped with air pollution control technology to decrease on-site emissions of particulate pollution. The increased cost of catalyzed filters is passed on to the public in the form of durable goods, new homes and taxes to cover building and transportation projects.

Yes, Andy Rooney – you may not know what platinum is used for, but you will eventually feel the pinch of unprecedented soaring platinum prices in your pocketbook.

A survey of British businesses, conducted by npower business has revealed strong concern that Government regulation to reduce carbon emissions will make the country uncompetitive and add more costs than benefits

The fifth npower Business Energy Index (nBEI 5) canvassed 200 senior managers and energy buyers at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and large industrial firms on attitudes to energy use, costs and C02 emissions, revealing unease within the business community about the existing CO2 reduction framework of regulation.

When questioned about the new Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) – a new carbon reduction scheme aimed at large businesses, announced in the 2007 Energy White Paper* – 71% of intensive energy users said they believed that the scheme would make the UK uncompetitive. When asked about the implementation of such regulation, 63% of respondents said they thought the costs would outweigh the benefits. Only 48% believed that the CRC would achieve its target of removing 1.2 million tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere each year by 2020.

Demonstrating further concern, 75% of intensive energy users surveyed said they thought the combined pressures of the Climate Change Levy, the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and the new CRC will place an undue burden on business.

The Government has shown a desire to involve businesses in meeting the UK’s CO2 reduction targets and introduced a framework of regulation to incentivise and reward emission reduction, but npower business’s findings indicates companies need further convincing that this is the best method. Comments from the report suggest that British businesses feel penalised as other European and global businesses do not have to conform to the same administrative and financial requirements imposed by UK regulation.

“Businesses have faced a raft of new legislation in recent years, with more now promised in the form of the CRC, so it is understandable that they may feel the responsibility to reduce CO2 is being placed at their door. However, with the UK’s CO2 emission targets becoming legally binding this year, we cannot escape the fact that all businesses will be called on to reduce their carbon footprint,” said Paul Coffey, managing director of npower business.

“While the need to actively reduce CO2 has become a business requirement in the last few years, it will increasingly become a priority as low carbon outputs become evermore linked with strong financial performance. Those that identify the advantages of low carbon operations now, and work within the existing legislative framework, will be the ones that benefit in the future,” he added.

He also pointed to the fact that advice is available from energy providers and government organisations, which can assist businesses in reducing CO2 output. The nBEI clearly suggests businesses are in need of guidance: 56% agreed they would value help in reducing CO2 emissions and 50% said they would welcome guidance to improve energy efficiency.

While the findings suggest a lack of support for carbon reduction regulation in business, finding 88% of respondents stating they support the Government’s commitment to reduce CO2 emissions and 56% said they thought compliance with climate change agreements had resulted in energy savings or process improvements. Also, 36% said they believed there were commercial advantages to be had from a small carbon footprint.

Mr. Coffey pointed to the fact that, “Businesses will have to develop policies to manage the risks associated with corporate energy use including cost, environmental and societal risks. In this way, decisions on buying and investment in energy efficiency measures that can reduce CO2 outputs can be assessed on a more holistic basis, rather than just cost. This moves away from a quick win scenario in which energy efficiency measures are only made for financial gain to a more progressive strategy in which the approach to energy management and CO2 reduction is aligned with business goals”.

* The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) is a mandatory cap and trade scheme, which will apply to large non-energy intensive public and private sector organisations. The CRC was first detailed in a 2007 Energy White Paper.

Reforesting Planet Earth for the sake of Human Survival

ACSA believes it has found the real cause of Global Warming: a little known era called “the Interglacial Period” that has been underway for nearly 18,000 years since the first half of a post Pleisticine Era Ice Age. Ice Ages are split into two halves, each equally frozen periods. In between, the Interglacial Period is a period of alternating Global Warming and Global Cooling cycles caused by changes in the Earth’s ocean levels, carbon cycles, ocean saline levels and the Earth’s angle of axis.

Earth has reached a Warming cycle that will end in the next 250 to 2000 years, but, it is still far, far colder than it was during the Pleisticine Era and precursors, which was the many millennium period on earth when Life emerged and expanded, after leaving the “snowball” like state it was in 340 million years ago.

It is actually NORMAL for the earth to be heating at this moment, with human activities contributing only a modest amount to that warming cycle, about 6/740th over all or 8 tenths of 1 percent in terms of the amount of CO2 contributed (6 billion versus 740 billion tons).

ACSA confronted Al Gore with the facts, publicly, but has not received a formal reply to the analytic information presented on its new website for the purpose of halting the Oxygen Depletion: “Ten Billion Acres” (http://10ba.org).

“Al Gore is, quite simply, wrong in blaming human activities as the cause for Global Warming. However, it is quite easy to get confused with a rise in CO2 in the atmosphere and what is really behind Global Warming. The earth is going through a natural glacial decline and arctic/antarctic ice cap meltdown. We needn’t worry about it recooling, as the space around us is enormously cold.” says Ed Englebart, PhD, a representative of the ACSA and chair of the 10BA project. “We have, however, found worse news in analyzing the misinformation and bad science found in ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, for which and other activities, Mr. Gore received one very inappropriate Nobel Prize I might add. Fact is, apparently unbeknownst to Gore, humanity is facing extinction from a different cause.”

“In 1492 our planet had Eighteen and a Half (18.5) billion acres of forests (and associated forest plant life, soils, insects and so on). Unfortunately, due to the expansion of civilization, we are today only left with Eight and a Half (8.5) billion acres: there has been a net loss of 10 Billion Acres of trees. During that time, 500 years about, other photosynthetic life has compensated for human existence and CO2 by the expansion of Algaes, which now deliver nearly 66% of all Oxygen to our Atmosphere through photosynthesis of sunlight and CO2. In 1492, Algae only delivered 33%, the trees did the rest. However, we are rapidly outgrowing the Algae’s ability to compensate the atmosphere.” commented the spokesperson.

“Within 50 years we will see significant decline in Oxygen to the point where, within 250 to 500 years, there won’t be enough to go around. We’ve worsened the picture by mining coal, it has left the earth without it’s ‘liver’, filtering that ordinarily removes toxins from runoff water. And our tendency to pollute the air does not help. Ground pollutants and agricultural runoff has damaged the rivers and oceans with pollutants normally not present, altering Algae’s ability to photosynthesize and creating microbes in the earth’s waters never before seen. This is accelerating forward the date after which we can no longer survive. We need to plant back those missing ten billion acres of trees, and put rock artesian filtration into the spaces formerly occupied by Coal. Or humanity will become extinct!” Englebart continued.

Water, water everywhere. Not any more.

“Water conservation is not something to do on an occasional basis. The Company points to severe water shortages in the Southeast as an example of why water conservation is no longer an option. Orme, Tennessee, a small town about 40 miles west of Chattanooga and 150 miles northwest of Atlanta, has run out of water. Three times a week the fire chief hauls about 20,000 gallons of water from an Alabama fire hydrant a few miles away to the dry town. Dozens of trips are made back and forth to carry water for the town’s 145 residents. For just three hours each evening, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., residents scurry to wash clothes, take showers and fill water jugs. To solve the water problem the town is constructing a 2-1/2 mile pipe to connect Orme to the Bridgeport, Alabama water supply with a $377,590 emergency grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Even if your area has not been hit by a water shortage that is no guarantee there won’t be a problem in the future. So what can the average person do to help? Start with the basics. McNeill offers 10 easy tips to help conserve water.

1. Fix leaky faucets. A faucet dripping at one drop per second wastes 2,700 gallons a year.

2. Save up to 700 gallons of water each month by taking shorter showers. Even a one or two minute reduction can make a difference.

3. Don’t use the hose to clean sidewalks. Use a broom and save about 150 gallons of water each time.

4. Adjust sprinklers to make sure that only the lawn is getting watered. This can save 500 gallons of water each month.

5. Don’t run water while brushing your teeth or shaving and save three gallons of water every time.

6. Keep drinking water in the refrigerator so you don’t have to run water for cool drinks. This alone can save 200 to 300 gallons a month.

7. Water the lawn in the morning rather than during the day or in the evening. You’ll save 300 gallons.

8. Only use your dishwasher and clothes washer for full loads. Avoid using the permanent press cycle because it uses an added 5 gallons for the extra rinse.

9. Clean your car using a pail of soapy water rather than running the hose. Use the hose only for rinsing. Try a waterless car washing system such as Ecotouch which can save up to 100 gallons of water per wash.

10. Make sure your toilet tank isn’t leaking. Just put a drop of food coloring in the toilet tank. If the color shows up in the bowl, your tank is leaking and you’re wasting up to 200 gallons of water a day.

These are just a handful of tips that each family can implement to make a difference. “Turn these tips into new habits and your household can save thousands of gallons of water each month,” says McNeill. “To make an even bigger difference in water conservation share these tips with everyone you know.”
